Sunday Oputu: Police promise to arrest perpetrators, as environmentalist condemns killing

 

Yenagoa—The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the death of a chieftain of the Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Sunday Frank Oputu in Yenagoa.

Mangrovepen.ng had earlier reported that Sunday  Oputu was killed by unknown gunmen at his Okaka estate residence in the state capital.

In a statement by SP Asinim Butswat, Police Public Relations Officer
Bayelsa State Command, the Police revealed that “on 26 April 2022, at about 23:00 hours, gunmen scaled the fence and gained access to the residence of Hon. Frank Oputu located at No. 1 Jonah Road Bay-Bridge, Kpansia, fired several shots at the Honourable through the window of his bedroom and fatally injured him.

“The injured victim was rushed to Federal Medical Center, Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.”

He further reassured members of the public of the Command’s resolved at ensuring the culprits are arrested and brought to book.

The Police boss also urged members of the public to remain calm as investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, renowned environmental activist Morris Alagoa has condemned the killing of Sunday  Oputu.

Alagoa who is the Project Officer/Head of Niger Delta Resource Centre at Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA), made this known in a chat with our reporter.

“I condemn the killing of our Ijaw brother (Frank Oputu), a Bayelsan who would have loved to live like any other,“ he said.
