Relief has come the way of students of the FCT School for the Blind, Jabi, Abuja, as RC Abuja Jabi Lakeside paid a visit to the School as part of its commitment to improving their welfare and creating a more supportive learning environment for students with special needs.
The outreach was extended to students of Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Government Secondary School (GSS) Kwali in FCT. The project, themed “Bright Minds: Every Future Deserves To Be Seen,” was co-sponsored by the Jolomi Arenyeka Charity.
The outreach attracted the presence of key Rotary leaders including the District Governor of District 9127, Dame (Dr.) Princess Joy Nky Okoro, the District Chair for Basic Education and Literacy, Rotarian Amara Ezediniru, and the President of RC Abuja Jabi Lakeside, Rotarian Caroline Achieng’ Morah. Also present were other Rotary Club Presidents, Mr. Timeyin Arenyeka of the Jolomi Arenyeka Charity, district officers, Club members, and Rotarians from other clubs, demonstrating Rotary’s unity and collective commitment to service.
Speaking at the event, the President of RC Abuja Jabi Lakeside, Rtn. Caroline Morah, encouraged the students and emphasized their potential:
“Each of you carries enormous potential. Your journey may come with unique challenges, but it also comes with unique strength. The ability to adapt, to persevere, and to see the world in your own powerful way is something to be proud of. The items we have donated today are meant to support your learning – but they are only tools. The real power lies within you.”
Also speaking at the event, the District Governor, of District 9127 DG Dame (Dr.) Princess Joy Nky Okoro, expressed her excitement at being part of what she described as “a compassionate and impactful initiative”, commending the club and partners for their commitment to inclusive service.
In her remarks, the District Chair for Basic Education and Literacy, Rtn Amara Ezediniru, emphasized the importance of sustained investment in education, particularly for children with special needs, noting that access to the right tools can significantly improve learning outcomes.
Also speaking, the District Coordinator, Special Needs Department, UBEB Abuja, Hadiza Hussain, described the donated items as vital instruments that promote independence, confidence, and academic advancement among the students.
She stated that the gesture represents not just an act of giving, but a meaningful investment in the intellectual growth and empowerment of the students.
In recognition of their dedication and sacrifice, teachers and faculty members were presented with tokens of appreciation for their continued commitment to nurturing and supporting the students.
The outreach featured the donation of essential learning and support materials including Perkins Braille machines and Braille paper, typewriters, talking calculators, digital voice recorders, geometry sets, branded school bags, white mobility canes, tables and benches.
A key highlight of the intervention was the restoration of 12 Braille machines at the primary school that had fallen into disrepair, alongside the provision of two Braille machines for students in Kwali.
In addition, the project addressed hygiene and welfare needs through the distribution of over 120 personalized, monogrammed bath towels, 50 dignity packs for female students, and the donation of industrial-sized waste receptacles.
In her response, the school principal, Hajia Hafsat Umar Isa, who was represented by Mr. Jonathan Momoh (General Duties Assistant), expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, stating that the donated materials would greatly support the students’ academic development and overall well-being.
She described the intervention as both timely and impactful, particularly in a learning environment where access to specialised materials is essential.
