Ultimate Love 2020 Highlights Day 3 – To shave or not to shave
Notions of beauty and hair have changed over the years and it is reflected in the conversation in the Love Pad.
When Jenny Koko asked: “What do you think about hairy ladies?”, she opened up pandora’s box.
There’s been a global movement where women are embracing their natural selves, and it extends to leaving their body hair as is. That means: no shaving, no waxing, no depilatory cream, or any other form of hair removal!
Students Laura Jackson and Ruby Jones started the Januhairy campaign in 2019 to normalise hair on women and for these women to share images of themselves online.
“It was about the pressures put on women to abide by these beauty rules to feel accepted,” Jackson says in an interview with UK newspaper, The Guardian. “When I see my body hair now, it reminds me of my love for myself.”
Back in the Love Pad, Michael brings up someone who he knows who has embraced herself and flaunts her hair.
Chris was on the other end of the spectrum and offered advice about shaving techniques: “When you’re shaving, just watch, our hair grows upward. So when you’re shaving, just watch it. Because if you shave in the opposite direction, you’re going to get bumps.”
Ikye points out that men only have to shave in two places on their body, pointing his face and under his arms. “But some guys don’t shave under their arms,” he adds. And Jenny Koko cringes.
