Niger Delta University Don Bags Global Recognition in Engineering

The global stage has once again spotlighted Nigerian brilliance as Engr. (Mrs.) Amalate Ann Jonathan Obuebite, PhD., FNSE, a distinguished academic of Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, Bayelsa State, received the Engineering Educator Award from the prestigious Society of Women Engineers (SWE), USA.

The award will be formally conferred during the SWE International Conference scheduled to be held from 23rd to 25th October 2025 in the United States of America, a gathering that brings together leading engineers, educators and innovators worldwide. As part of the program, Dr. (Mrs.) Obuebite will also deliver a keynote presentation on “Strategies for Effective Women Empowerment in the Energy Industry”, further amplifying her voice as a global advocate for inclusion and excellence in STEM.

The Engineering Educator Award, one of the most competitive categories in SWE’s honours, is reserved for women who have made 10–20 years of distinguished contributions to engineering and demonstrated at least five years of exceptional instructional excellence. In 2025, only two women worldwide were selected, with Dr. (Mrs.) Obuebite proudly stands as the sole African recipient, a historic feat for Nigeria and the continent at large.

At Niger Delta University, Dr. (Mrs.) Obuebite is celebrated as a performing lecturer whose teaching, mentorship, and research continue to inspire and shape future engineers. Known for her innovative classroom methods and strong commitment to discipline and academic excellence, she has earned admiration from students, colleagues, and the broader engineering community.

Beyond her university role, she serves as Chairperson of the Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN), Bayelsa State Chapter. In this capacity, she has championed women’s inclusion in STEM fields, developed mentorship programs, and created opportunities that encourage young girls to pursue careers in science and engineering. Her leadership within APWEN has reinforced her image as a transformative figure advocating for gender balance and youth empowerment in technical professions.

Dr. Obuebite’s recognition is widely seen as a testament to the resilience, capacity, and intellectual excellence of Nigerian professionals who continue to break barriers and set standards across the world. Her dedication to teaching, mentorship, and leadership underscores the impact of educators who are not only raising the next generation but also setting global benchmarks in their fields.

As the accolades pour in, Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa State, and Nigeria at large celebrate Dr. Amalate Ann Obuebite, not merely as an award recipient, but as a trailblazer, role model, and proud ambassador of African excellence on the global engineering stage.
