George Turnah Reflects on Loyalty and Political Shifts in Bayelsa

YENAGOA — The Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State and South-South Zonal Secretary of the party, George Turnah, has stirred conversation across the state’s political landscape following a thought-provoking reflection on loyalty, power dynamics, and shifting alliances.

In a strongly worded statement shared publicly, Turnah — who currently leads the PDP in Bayelsa in acting capacity while also serving as the party’s South-South Zonal Secretary — drew a symbolic comparison between past and present political gatherings in the state, urging reflection on the importance of loyalty and gratitude in leadership.

“When I go through my phone gallery and watch pictures taken at state functions and political gatherings as far back as 2019/2020 in Bayelsa, and then reconcile it with pictures of state functions and political gatherings today, I just remember the story of the sick old woman who got healed with the warmth from firewood heat and had to scatter and throw away the firewood after she got well, forgetting that sickness and the human body na 5 and 6,” he stated.

Using the allegory of a healed old woman who discarded the firewood that once kept her warm, the Bayelsa PDP Acting Chairman suggested that political actors must be mindful of the roles individuals and alliances play during challenging times.

“If Jesus tarries, the old woman will definitely need the firewood tomorrow,” he added, emphasizing the unpredictability of political fortunes and the cyclical nature of influence and support.

Though he did not mention specific names or events, observers believe the message alludes to recent political realignments and evolving power structures within the PDP and the broader Bayelsa political space. His remarks have since sparked debate among stakeholders, with some interpreting the statement as a call for reconciliation, while others view it as a subtle caution against political ingratitude.

Political analysts note that Turnah’s reflection comes at a time when the party continues to consolidate its structures across the South-South region, amid shifting alliances and strategic recalibrations ahead of future political engagements.

As discussions continue, many see the statement from the Bayelsa PDP Acting Chairman and South-South Zonal Secretary as a reminder that political relationships, much like the “firewood” in his analogy, may once again become vital in times of uncertainty.

The development adds yet another layer to the ongoing political discourse in Bayelsa State, as leaders and stakeholders navigate the delicate balance between loyalty, ambition, and the realities of governance.
