FG hires lawyers to defend Ekweremadu Senator Ike Ekweremadu, a former Deputy Senate President, and his wife, Beatrice, are being defended by attorneys on behalf of the Federal Government through the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom against accusations of organ harvesting. After a closed-door session of the Senate on Wednesday, President Ahmad Lawan made this announcement.

He also said that a delegation from the Senate would travel to London to meet with Ekweremadu and his wife by Friday at the latest.

Last week, Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice were detained and charged at London’s Oxbridge Magistrates Court. The former Deputy Senate President and his wife will remain in custody until the next adjournment date of July 7, 2022, the court decided.

According to Lawan, the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which is headed by Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa, will conduct the fact-finding mission. He claimed that during the closed session, the lawmakers were informed of Ekweremadu’s struggles and the part that Ambassador Sarafadeen Ishola, the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been playing in ensuring that Ekweremadu receives all necessary support.

He praised the High Commissioner and his staff for their efforts in giving Ekweremadu the necessary consular support. The High Commission has been offering all consular services, according to Lawan, including hiring attorneys to represent Ekweremadu. According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been involved and is currently offering Ekweremadu diplomatic support.
