AN OPEN APPEAL TO HIS EXCELLENCY SENATOR Douye Diri, EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF BAYELSA STATE

Your Excellency,

I write this with deep respect and admiration for your leadership and commitment to the peace and progress of Bayelsa State. As a concerned citizen, I am compelled to draw your kind attention to an issue that weighs heavily on the hearts of many residents of Yenagoa and its environs — the increasing insecurity and instances of police misconduct.

Sir, we recognize that the protection of lives and property is a collective responsibility, and as citizens, we are committed to supporting your administration in every way possible. However, recent events have raised serious concerns about the safety of our people — not just from criminal elements, but also, unfortunately, from the actions of a few misguided individuals within our security agencies.

Reports of robbery, kidnapping, and harassment have become disturbingly frequent. Most heartbreaking is the recent incident involving a young, promising musician who tragically lost his life under controversial circumstances involving men in uniform. Eyewitnesses allege that after an initial encounter with the police, the young man and his companions were later trailed and fatally attacked, even after intervention by an EFCC official. These incidents are not only devastating to families but also erode public trust in our security institutions.

Your Excellency, the people of Bayelsa are peace-loving and law-abiding. We rely on your continued wisdom and compassion as our leader to address these rising concerns. We respectfully appeal for urgent action: a thorough review of security protocols, better oversight of law enforcement activities, and renewed community-based strategies to restore confidence and protect the lives of innocent citizens.

Please, sir, help make our streets safe again — from both criminal threats and unlawful abuse of power.

May God continue to guide and strengthen you as you lead our beloved state toward greater peace, justice, and development.

Yours sincerely,
Perekeme Fidelis Perekeme
A Concerned Citizen
