Former senator representing Rivers South-East, Magnus Abe, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding a proposed visit by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to Bayelsa State, describing the ongoing frenzy as unnecessary and wasteful.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Abe expressed concern over what he termed “Wikephobia” ( the fear of Nyesom Wike) which he said has gripped Bayelsa State, leading to heightened political tension and repeated attempts to stop the former Rivers Governor from entering the state.

According to him, despite Wike’s public clarification that he has no intention of visiting Bayelsa at this time, political actors, elders, community leaders, and even the courts have remained fixated on the issue, holding meetings and press conferences to prevent the visit.

Abe criticized the Bayelsa State Government for allegedly wasting public resources on what he called “anti-Wike” activities, advising instead that such funds be directed toward developmental initiatives that benefit citizens.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees all Nigerians, including Nyesom Wike, the freedom to move freely within our country,” Abe said.

He added that just as Governor Douye Diri visits Port Harcourt and Abuja freely, Wike should be allowed to enter Yenagoa without controversy, if he so desires.

Calling for a change in leadership style within the South-South region, Abe urged leaders to foster better communication and unity.

“A simple phone call from Governor Diri to Minister Wike could have saved the state from all this trauma and needless expenses,” he noted.

Abe emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration among leaders in the South-South, warning that continued division would only hinder regional progress.
