Yusuf John Suberu: Finding Paths for Road Safety in Nigeria

Since his emergence as the National Coordinator, VIO Mayors, the Special Road Safety Mayors of the Vehicle Inspection Officers of the Federation, Dr Yusuf John Suberu is finding better ways for making driving more safer on Nigerian roads.

Dr Yusuf, a pastor, prophet, philanthropist, and pathfinder is an unassuming personality of international pedigree. He comes to you in simplicity but full of sophicated ideas to find solutions to the needs of humanity.

For the course of humanity, Dr Yusuf is undyingly committed to put a smile on the faces of people across tribes and tongue, region and religion. Therefore, his sojourn in a critical aspect of society will not come as a surprise to many that knows him.

Road is important national infrastructure that enables movement from one place to another. Everyday, people from different work of life ply the roads to transact businesses for their living. Others use the road for tourism as tourist. While use the road to go for different engagement such as meetings, celebrations, crusades and friendly visit.

Such an important component of society should not be left in the hands of mediocre and selfish persons. The responsibility of vehicle inspection and persons in-charge should be a service deserving of high honor and sense of duty.

That is why, Dr Yusuf John Suberu clearly fits the call of duty as a Special Road Safety Mayors. He comes with a clear vision, purpose and commitment tied to the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 – 2030. According to the Decade of Action for Road Safety, the UN set a target of at least a 50% reduction of road traffic accidents and injuries within the period.

Through Dr Yusuf John Suberu Foundation, there is a robust advocacy on road safety through out the federation to beat this target. Dr Yusuf is of the opinion, people should get to destination to meet up their daily engagements if safety measures are kept to standard.

Dr Yusuf has set out a comprehensive action plan and structural framework for the VIO to overhaul the process of vehicle inspection. He advocates for a proper licensing process not for revenue generation but for testing for proficiency, efficiency and worthiness of vehicles and the users.

As a pathfinder, Dr Yusuf opines that to guarantee safety on Nigerian roads, government should downplay on revenue generation through the Vehicle Inspection Service but see it as a professional organ to promote safety.

This was his message when he visited, His Excellency, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna State on an advocacy visit. Dr Yusuf as a road safety consultant says vehicle inspection is key road safety is key for preventable deaths and injuries on the road.

In advocating for the restructuring of the VIO system in the federation, Dr Yusuf is visiting various unit Heads of the Conference of the Directorate/Traffic Officers
